What are asanas
Asanas are yoga postures held comfortably. Asanas are 'innercises' for our body. They aid in massaging the different inner glands and organs of our body.
Asanas makes our body stretch and stretching is a natural way for humans to release tension and improve muscle tone. When combined with correct breathing, they de-stress our nervous system and increase our energy levels.
There are many asanas whose postures look similar to those of different animals, and therefore many asanas are called by the names of those animals (eg. Cobra, Hare etc).
Asanas help invigorate and maintain a healthy and hardy body. However they are not to be considered as a general cure of diseases.
Asanas coupled with appropriate stretching movements help conserve our body's energies and transform them to subtle forms of mental energies. Asanas help us develop an inner awareness and also calm the mind. They are helpful to those practicing meditation.
The relationship between our physical body and our mind is very close. Our mental expression is brought about by the different propensities within us. These propensities are dependent on our different glands in our body.
The different glands in our body secrete different hormones. If there is a defect in any particular gland resulting in the over or under secretion of certain hormones, this will cause the over or under expression of certain physical or mental propensities. One can thus take control of one's health by the regular and correct practice of asanas.
